The command `wget -nv -O wget-robots.txt https://www.linuxfordevices.com/robots.txt` saves a 67-byte response under `wget-robots.txt`. I enjoy following the handoff from a web address to a named file on disk. The URL and output name give you two useful points to follow through the command. Trace the request from that URL into Wget’s work. What wget does

A workshop handout PDF is open beside a stylus, with room for a quick note near the diagram. I like that a handwritten mark can serve a different purpose from changing the diagram itself. The result you have in mind can narrow the search before app names get in the way. First, identify the kind

After `touch report.txt`, `wc -c report.txt` can report zero even though the path now exists. I’m curious about the timestamps `touch` assigns as it creates that empty file. A file’s size and its timestamps tell you different things about what happened to it. Let’s look at the timestamp fields `touch` changes. What the touch command

A terminal prints a Java version, but a background service still says Java is unavailable. I’m fascinated that the shell behind a command can change what Java an application sees. The terminal’s result gives you a reference point to compare with the service’s launch context. Its meaning begins with what `java –version` tells you. What

Watching memory rise in GNOME System Monitor while deciding whether to open another app can make the available amount hard to judge. I’m intrigued that cache can count as used without being out of reach for new work. Linux’s free counter captures pages unused at that moment, not every page it can hand to an

A shell check comparing logs.txt with a target count has to say whether that target tracks line breaks or records. I’d make awk the counter when the target is a record total, since it includes a final record without a newline. For a direct newline-character total, wc -l is the relevant command. The key detail
