Wind River ships testing framework for Android

Wind River announced the availability of an automated software testing solution for Android-based devices. Wind River Framework for Automated Software Testing (FAST) for Android helps analyze a device's functionality, performance, and stability, and also checks compliance with the Android Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) standard, the company says.

Wind River FAST is designed for device manufacturers, mobile operators, silicon manufacturers and software developers who need to test Android-based devices, says Wind River. The framework helps to streamline and automate the software testing process, improve software quality and stability, and verify and prove compliance with the Android CTS, the Intel subsidiary says.

Wind River FAST provides thousands of Wind River-authored automated tests designed to evaluate an open-source-based device, says Wind River. The framework appears to be based in part on the Linux-ready Wind River Test Management (WRTM) software.

Developers can combine the Android CTS and open source tests with existing operator device acceptance tests into an automated test solution, says Wind River. The framework consolidates test results into a single uniform database, said to be accessible using virtually any reporting tool.

Designed to work as a standalone testing application, or as a complement to Wind River Platform for Android (see architecture diagram below), Wind River FAST can be customized for leading silicon architectures, devices, or mobile networks, says the company.

Wind River's test library includes tests for low level, middleware, and application level code, says Wind River. The tests are said to include device performance benchmarks of graphics and boot time, interoperability tests for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and telephony and board support package (BSP) tests.

Wind River says it is looking at extending Wind River FAST to support the Linux-based MeeGo distribution and the Genivi automotive platform. The Genivi reference platform for automotive infotainment is currently based on Moblin, but is expected to soon be offered in a MeeGo version running on the new Intel Atom Z6xx ("Moorestown") processor.
