An “Operation not permitted” response from `dmesg` is frustrating when you’re trying to read a kernel message. I find the distinction useful: the error concerns access to the buffer, not whether `dmesg` exists. You can use `dmesg` without options to display the available kernel buffer. You’ll see the recorded boot and device activity. What dmesg

The `QUERY TIME` line reports how long the DNS exchange took, not how long a page takes to load. I’m curious that an empty answer can still arrive with `NOERROR`. You can match the response to the name and record type you asked about. Read the reply’s status before interpreting its answer. What a dig

If Firefox’s package name is not obvious, pacman -Ss searches repository names and descriptions. I like that the operation flag makes the query’s scope visible. The next useful clue is the package data behind pacman’s query. You can use that context to understand the candidate before choosing an install action. Pacman separates repository packages from

In GNOME Software, “Chromium Web Browser” can sit beside a similarly named game in the search results. I like that spotting the right entry makes the browser choice feel less mysterious before you install it. You can pin down whether Chromium or Google Chrome is the browser you mean, rather than choosing by name alone.

`uniq -i weather.txt` keeps the first weather spelling even when the next line changes capitalization. I’m curious about how much the comparison rule can change what counts as a match. Read `weather.txt` in order, keeping each line beside the one before it. Notice which adjacent lines `uniq` treats as a match. What uniq compares uniq

The confirmation for `sudo apt install nano` comes only after APT calculates dependencies. I’m struck by the step between repository information and the dependency plan APT presents. Inspect the local index APT uses to calculate package changes. Compare it with the installed package state dpkg tracks. What apt manages on a Debian-based system APT, the

`Plug ‘tpope/vim-sensible’` can sit in `~/.vimrc` before its repository appears under `~/.vim/plugged`. What stands out to me is that the plugin choice stays visible in Vim’s configuration. Trace the declaration from `~/.vimrc` to the checkout directory. That lets you see what Vim-Plug changes in Vim. What Vim-Plug changes Vim-Plug is an optional plugin manager for

The load averages at the top of `top` can look alarming beside a CPU line showing plenty of idle time. I love the puzzle of numbers that seem to disagree until you know what each one measures. The task rows give you a process-level view instead of another machine-wide reading. You’ll see how `top` sets
