How to Install and Use Nitrogen on Linux Systems

Nitrogen is a wallpaper browser and setter for X Window System sessions. Use it when your window manager needs a desktop background restored at login, not when you need a wallpaper tool for a Wayland-only session.

Install Nitrogen from your distribution repository

Install the package through the repository your distribution maintains. The package name is nitrogen on Debian and Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and Fedora systems.

# Debian or Ubuntu
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nitrogen

# Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S nitrogen

# Fedora
sudo dnf install nitrogen

The Debian package metadata describes Nitrogen as a wallpaper browser and changing utility for X. Check your own repository before assuming an identical version.

Choose a wallpaper directory and apply an image

Start Nitrogen from your application launcher or run nitrogen from an X session. Add the folder that holds your images in Preferences, select an image, choose a layout mode, then apply it to the display.

Nitrogen writes its selection to its configuration, so the next task is restoring that saved choice when your window manager starts. If you are deciding which desktop layer owns the background, see how a desktop environment differs from a window manager.

Restore the wallpaper when your session starts

Add exec –no-startup-id nitrogen –restore to the startup file used by your X11 window manager, then reload the configuration or start a new session so the saved background is reapplied.

exec --no-startup-id nitrogen --restore

Use the i3 installation steps on Ubuntu before adding the startup command, because the X11 session and its configuration must exist first.

Check the session boundary before troubleshooting

Nitrogen targets X Window System desktops. If it opens but does not affect your background, confirm that you started an X11 session and that another desktop component is not setting the wallpaper afterward.

Minimal setups often make this distinction visible. The overview of Linux desktop environments helps you identify whether you are using a complete desktop or composing a window-manager session yourself.

When to use a different wallpaper tool

Use Nitrogen when you want a local image folder, an X11 session, and a saved background restored at startup. If you want a scheduled image source for GNOME instead, BingWall for Linux is built around Bing’s daily wallpaper.

For a downloader and wallpaper catalog, compare the workflow with ColorWall’s wallpaper manager. If you are assembling an X11 desktop around Openbox, the Picom compositor guide covers a separate session component that handles compositing rather than wallpaper selection.

Remove Nitrogen

Remove the package with the same package manager that installed it. Remove the restore command from your window-manager startup file as well, otherwise the session will keep attempting to run it.

# Debian or Ubuntu
sudo apt remove nitrogen

# Arch Linux
sudo pacman -Rns nitrogen

# Fedora
sudo dnf remove nitrogen

Install Nitrogen only after you confirm that your session uses X11, then make its restore command part of the window-manager startup path you already use.
