MontaVista Software
The leader in embedded Linux commercialization
MontaVista helps embedded developers get the most out of open source by adding commercial quality, integration, hardware enablement, expert support, and the resources of the MontaVista development community. Because MontaVista customers enjoy faster time to market, more competitive device functionality, and lower total cost, more devices have been deployed with MontaVista than with any other Linux.

MontaVista Software invented embedded Linux commercialization in 1999 to give device designers a platform to deliver the best possible product in the shortest possible time. Since then, through growth and innovation MontaVista has remained the leading company in this category.

MontaVista Products
MontaVista Linux 6 delivers a new approach to embedded Linux development. It meets embedded developers where they are in the development cycle - with a complete embedded Linux distribution and developer tools for faster time to development. With Market Specific Distributions designed for the hardware, the MontaVista Integration Platform and unprecedented flexibility in a commercial solution, MontaVista Linux 6 enables developers to build from source to more easily customize their software stack and add product-differentiating features.

Other MontaVista Linux products include:
Mobilinux is an optimized Linux operating system and development platform for wireless handsets and other mobile devices such as GPS devices, portable medical devices, and wireless POS terminals. Mobilinux 5.0 is the operating system used in 90 percent of Linux-based smartphones. More than 35 million phones and other mobile devices run on Mobilinux, far more than any other commercial Linux.

Professional Edition Linux (Pro) is a platform for developers who want all the benefits of an open source development platform, as well as the ability to achieve rapid time to market. Pro enables state-of-the-art development across a wide array of intelligent device markets, including networking and communications, instrumentation and control, aerospace and defense, SOHO devices, and medical electronics.

Carrier Grade Edition is a commercial-grade Linux development platform for developers working with RAS (reliability, availability, and serviceability) managed hardware (HPI, IPMI) or custom hardware, who require long-term support and high availability.

DevRocket is the Integrated Development Environment that supports MontaVista Linux Platform and Application development. DevRocket delivers a set of tools designed to streamline and automate common embedded Linux development and analysis tasks. Previously based on Eclipse, and now a set of standard Eclipse plug-ins, DevRocket significantly increases developer productivity by simplifying the complex development tasks of embedded Linux. DevRocket plug-ins can work within standard Eclipse-based platforms.

Applications developed on MontaVista Software cover a wide range devices, including consumer electronics, mobile handsets, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace and military, and others. More than 2,000 companies use MontaVista Linux, and we power tens of millions of products used around the world every day.

Meld Embedded Linux Community

Come Meld with us! Join us in Meld, a new community for embedded Linux developers. The Meld developer community helps embedded Linux developers connect with credible and like-minded peers in order to share information and software for designing commercial devices.
  • Connect: Leverage the experience of other embedded Linux developers.
  • Share: Collaborate on information and ideas.
  • Design: Develop products faster with information re-use.
MontaVista’s open source leadership

When you select a Linux platform for your product, a provider that doesn’t work with the open source community won’t meet your needs. Some companies are part-time Linux companies. Their main business may be processors or proprietary software, but they provide embedded Linux as a side business. They are not committed to open source. They don’t understand Linux or how to work with the open source community.

No embedded software company has done more to lead the open source community than MontaVista:
  • A top 20 contributor to the mainline Linux kernel for several years in a row
  • Contributed more lines of source code than all other embedded Linux companies combined
  • Made Linux contributions of greater importance than those from any other embedded Linux company
  • Active contributor or maintainer of key areas of Linux inside and outside the kernel, plus other kernel trees and communities
  • Opened more hardware platforms to Linux than any other company
  • Member, sponsor, co-founder, director, board member, or chair of more than 20 open source organizations
