Google has released an unlocked version of its Android-based Nexus One phone that's compatible with the 3G networks of AT T and Roger Wireless. Meanwhile, a Flurry report claims that the Nexus One sold far fewer units in its first two months than the iPhone and the Motorola Droid did in theirs, says eWEEK.
PCI/104-Express SBC offers RAID support
Advanced Digital Logic (ADL) announced a PCI/104-Express SBC (single board computer) that supports Intel's 45nm, SFF (small form factor) Core 2 Duo or Celeron M CPUs. The ADLGS45PC offers four onboard SATA ports with RAID support, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, two gigabit Ethernet ports, and eight USB 2.0 ports, the company says.
Intel fields six-core embedded CPUs
Intel launched a bevy of new processors, including its highest-end desktop CPU and new, security-enhanced 32nm CPUs for the enterprise. The Xeon Processor 5600 series also includes the chipmaker's first six-core embedded processors, plus a dual-core processor for & micro servers& that has a TDP of only 30 Watts, the company says.
Hackable Linux clamshell goes on sale for $99
A startup that includes former members of Openmoko has begun shipping a hackable Linux-based & copyleft& clamshell for $99. Qi Hardware's Ben NanoNote incorporates Ingenic's MIPS-compatible 336MHz XBurst Jz4720 processor, 32MB SDRAM, and 2GB NAND flash, and offers a 3-inch, 320 x 240 display.
Solid-state disks fall to below $100
Solid state disks (SSDs) moved closer to commodity status, with the announcement of a 40GB model from Intel for $125, and a sub-$100, 32GB version from OCZ Technology. Intel's X25-V and OCZ's Onyx can be installed in laptops or embedded devices, but are primarily aimed at enthusiasts who want to install faster boot disks in their computers, according to the companies.
Embedded giant acquires in-vehicle expertise
Embedded equipment manufacturer Advantech announced the acquisition of DLog GmbH from Augusta Technologie AG for 12.85 million Euros (about $17.6 million). DLog is claimed to be Europe's third largest producer of rugged industrial computers, with a focus on in-vehicle terminals and computers plus expertise in embedded Linux and Windows XP/CE development.
IP phone runs Linux on ARM SoC
STMicroelectronics announced a design win for its new ARM-based SPEAr 300 SoC, which it says drives the Linux-based Snom 870 VoIP phone. The Snom 870 offers a 4.3-inch color touchscreen, gigabit Ethernet and USB connectivity, plus an integrated XML browser, says Snom.
Configurable RISC controller offers Linux-ready MMU
Tensilica is shipping new Diamond Standard controllers for dataplane applications, including one Linux-optimized model. Based on Tensilica's configurable, 32-bit RISC & Xtensa& architecture, the five upward-compatible processor cores include a Diamond Standard 233L processor with a Linux-optimized MMU, and are claimed to be 15 percent faster and more power efficient than earlier models.
NAS devices run Linux on dual-core Atom D510
Qnap Systems is readying two 1U network-attached storage (NAS) devices targeting everything from small businesses to enterprises. The Linux-based TS-459U-RP and TS-459U-SP incorporate the dual-core Intel Atom D510 processor, offer up to 8TB of storage via four bays, and are compatible with VMware's vSphere4 (ESX 4.0) virtualization platform, says the company.
Linux summit dissects MeeGo
The Linux Foundation has announced sessions for its Collaboration Summit, scheduled for Apr. 14-16 at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco. This year's event features a full-day workgroup on MeeGo, as well as discussions of Linux topics including toolchain, cloud computing, printing, filesystems, ISV porting, and open source compliance.
Opera Mini 5 browser released for Android
Opera Software has released a beta version of its Opera Mini 5 mobile browser for Android. Opera Mini 5 offers features including tabbed browsing, a password manager, bookmarks, and visual bookmarks known as & Speed Dial,& but there's no multi-touch support yet, according to the company.
Fanless PC has two PCI slots
Avalue announced a fanless box PC that incorporates two PCI expansion slots. The EPS-AT270-2PCI includes an Intel Atom N270 processor and up to 2GB of RAM, room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive, six serial ports, and an ExpressCard slot, the company says.
Nettop taps Ion 2 GPU
Shuttle announced a Barebone XS35 nettop equipped with a dual-core Intel Atom D510, as well as the HD-ready Nvidia Ion 2 graphics. Meanwhile NewEgg is selling an Eee Box B202 nettop with Red Flag Linux for only $189, and the Eee PC-oriented Eeebuntu Linux distro is moving from Ubuntu to Debian with EB 4.0.
Embedded Linux keynotes to grapple with Android
The CE Linux Forum (CELF) has opened registration and announced speakers for its Embedded Linux Conference on Apr. 12-14 in San Francisco. The event will feature keynote speakers Greg Kroah-Hartman and Matt Asay, and offer over 50 sessions on embedded Linux topics including flash file-systems, RT-Preempt, security, Moorestown, and Android.
Shoebox PC's built around COM Express module
Kontron announced an Intel Core 2 Duo computer designed to be integrated into the chassis of automation devices. The KIC-MC has space for two 2.5-inch hard disk drives, includes four gigabit Ethernet ports, sports nine USB 2.0 ports, and supports both LVDS and DVI-I displays, the company says.
CompactPCI boards adopt Pineview Atoms
Adlink is shipping a series of 3U CompactPCI processor blades with Intel Atom N450, D410, or dual-core D510 processors. The cPCI-3610 Series blades come in 4HP, 8HP, and 12HP versions, offer gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, and serial connectivity, and provide power consumption ranging from 15.2 to 19.35 Watts.
N900 gains VoIP service -- and will soon offer MeeGo
VoX Communications announced it will resell Nokia's Maemo Linux-based N900 smartphone with a mobile VoIP plan offering unlimited data and voice service. Meanwhile, Nokia confirmed that the N900 will be the first smartphone to run the Moblin/Maemo mashup, MeeGo, when a preliminary version of the operating system debuts at the end of the month.
Rugged COM format gets even tougher
MEN Micro announced a COM (computer-on-module) employing its own ESMexpress format along with Intel's Atom Z5xxP or PT processors. The XM1L has up to 2GB of soldered-on RAM plus a SATA port, uses less than seven watts, operates from -40 to 185 deg. F, and withstands shocks up to 15G, the company says.
Networking appliance taps Freescale's QorIQ processor
Portwell announced a network appliance using Freescale's PowerPC-based, 45nm-fabricated QorIQ system-on-chip. The Linux-ready, 1U rackmount & CAK-2000& offers a dual-core QorIQ P2020, clocked to 1.2 GHz and equipped with an integrated security engine, and also provides up to 4GB DDR3 RAM and six gigabit Ethernet ports.
Rugged COM Express board serves up soldered Core 2 Duo
GE Intelligent Platforms announced a rugged COM Express module with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. The Linux-ready bCOM2-L1100 offers soldered processors and memory, shock and vibration protection, an extended temperature version, RAID support, and an optional carrier board, the company says.
