Coventive's "GCS" promises just that capability. story Vita Nuova brings Inferno to the US -- The new US location brings Vita Nuova full circle, since much of the development work for Inferno and Plan 9 took place at Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs. story Lineo releases BusyBox upgrade (vers 0.47) -- the new release fixes bugs and adds a long list of new functions to the popular "swiss army knife" utility toolset for embedded systems. story New embedded X86 CPU runs on a single AA battery -- Rise demonstrated its iDragon mP6 processor playing VCD movies with only a single off-the-shelf AA battery. The new CPU targets multimedia-enriched handheld appliances. story Asian embedded Linux supplier enters US market -- Coventive Technologies' new US office will focus on developing and expanding strategic business alliances with North American companies in the areas of open source product design and development, software distribution, and professional services. Of note, the company offers one of the smallest fully functional commercial embedded Linux kernels -- at just 143 KB. story Nixdorf embeds Red Hat in a point-of-sale thin-client system -- Red Hat has assisted Wincor Nixdorf in bringing to market the Nixdorf BEETLE Point-of-Sale systems based on Embedded Linux. story Opera 4.0 for Linux Beta Released -- an important new Linux browser alternative is one step closer to a full release. Download it, and try it for yourself. story TimeSys announces real-time and QoS enhanced networking -- The new QoS networking support comes in addition to other real-time features within the TimeSys Linux/RT operating system. story Two Euro embedded & real-time Linux workshops -- a pair of 2-day vendor-neutral technical workshops are being held in The Netherlands (Nov. 7-8) and Italy (Nov. 13-14). story Which is it: -ible, or -able? -- "The problem began when [MontaVista] announced a 'fully preemptable hard real-time Linux kernel.' Then came the debate about whether their kernel was or was not fully preemptable, and whether or not it was truly hard real-time. But that's not where the debate ends. Nobody thought of questioning another aspect of MontaVista's release -- namely . . . Had they spelled "preemptable" correctly?" story Microwindows v0.89pre2 includes handwriting recognition -- the new release includes a few new capabilities, including handwriting recognition, graphics keyboard, and a new window manager. MINIX -- a low-end open source UNIX-like OS -- MINIX is a small operating system that is very similar to UNIX and is now released under an open-source license that is equivalent to the BSD license. MINIX was developed for educational purposes. story
ART Linux -- ART Linux is a real-time extension to Linux, developed by Youichi Ishiwata at ETL. It is inspired by RTLinux, but its developers claim that it offers several advantages. story Small Linux -- This site seeks to be a resource for users who need a Linux Kernel that meets small memory requirements. story EL/IX: an embedded Linux API -- EL/IX is an application programming interface (API) that allows software developers to deploy applications on embedded products running Linux. EL/IX provides an interface that ensures application portability for any EL/IX compliant operating systems, such as Linux or eCos. story
