A closeup look at Sharp's new Zaurus Linux-PDA -- Sharp announced last week that developer units of their new Zaurus SL-5000D Linux-based PDA will become available early this month. LinuxDevices.com founder Rick Lehrbaum had the pleasure of getting a closeup look at the new Sharp PDA, and seeing it in action. Commercial YOPY PDAs to begin shipping this month -- G.Mate announced plans to begin shipments of the commercial version of its Linux-based YOPY PDA by the end of November, 2001. That would make the YOPY the second Linux-based PDA to reach the important milestone of production shipments, with the Agenda's VR-3 being the first (currently available for $229 through Fry's Electronics), and followed soon by Sharp's Zaurus. Isamu comes to Milano! -- The Japanese-built Humanoid Robot H7 ("Isamu") -- with RTLinux inside -- will be presented by Dr. Satoshi Kagami, Senior Research Scientist at the Digital Human Laboratory of the National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology of Tokyo, Japan during the Embedded Linux Expo & Conference in Milan, Italy, Nov. 26-29. New open source Java-like VM targets embedded Linux -- Earlier this month, Brussels-based telematics software/hardware specialist ACUNIA NV announced the availability of Wonka, a Java-compatible virtual machine (VM) designed specifically for embedded devices, available under BSD-like open source license. Navy Tactical Data Systems supplier dons a Hard Hat -- GET Engineering Corp., a manufacturer of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) Navy Tactical Data Systems (NTDS) products that are deployed in tactical applications of all classes of U.S. Naval and NATO vessels, has successfully converted to the Hard Hat Linux operating environment, porting from a proprietary RTOS platform to embedded Linux. Century GPLs device operating environment -- Century's PIXIL Operating Environment (OE) has been released to the open source community and is now called the "PIXIL Open Environment". PIXIL OE provides a standard platform for smart Internet-enabled devices which delivers a standard set of elements for wireless communications, networking, web browsing, power management, and GUIs. Source code is available under both a commercial license and the open source GPL license. Story

Tuxia Labs releases upgrade to NxZilla -- Tuxia Labs Australia has released an upgrade to NxZilla, a set of libraries that allow Mozilla to be used with a NanoX server. Story

Euro Embedded Linux expo to feature real-time keynote -- The main keynote talk of the Embedded Linux Expo & Conference later this month in Milan, Italy is entitled: "Measuring Performance in Real-Time Linux". The keynote speaker is Fred Proctor, a prominent scientist and member of the Control Systems Group of the U.S. National Institute of Standards in Maryland, U.S. Story

Open source MyLinux PLW project is scuttled -- The MyLinux Pocket Linux Workstation project has (at least temporarily) been canceled. The completely open source hardware/software project was sponsored by Arizona Cooperative Power LLC, and had reached the stage of accepting advanced purchase orders for beta versions of the device. Gateway Net-surfing device bites the dust -- Speaking of discontinuations, computer maker Gateway has become the latest company to kill off a web surfing appliance, officially discontinuing the Connected Touch Pad that it developed with America Online. As you may have guessed from the presence of this item here, the device ran Embedded Linux. Story

IBM open sources Jikes Research Virtual Machine -- IBM Research has released the Jikes Research Virtual Machine (RVM) as open source software, available on the IBM developerWorks website. The Jikes RVM runs on AIX/PowerPC, Linux/PowerPC and Linux/IA-32 platforms and includes state-of-the-art virtual machine technologies for dynamic compilation, adaptive optimization, garbage collection, thread scheduling, and synchronization.
