New book: "Building Embedded Linux Systems" -- O'Reilly publishing has released an important new book on embedded Linux, "Building Embedded Linux Systems" by Karim Yaghmour. LinuxDevices.com technical editor Jerry Epplin provides a highly detailed review of the new book on a chapter-by-chapter basis, and offers an assessment of both its strengths and weaknesses.
Developing software for a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 Linux PDA -- Bruce Forsberg set out to find an MP3 player that could both work with Linux, and be capable of playing "Old Time Radio" (OTR) shows -- CD-Rs loaded with radio broadcasts from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s in MP3 format. After some searching, Forsberg determined that a Linux PDA would be his best bet, and he wrote this technical article about how he accomplished his mission as an inspiration to others to start programming for the Sharp Zaurus PDAs. How to use free software in FPGA embedded designs -- Following publication of his article about a high-res network camera based on a reconfigurable FPGA running Linux, it dawned on Andrey Filippov that there might be a significant -- and mostly untapped -- opportunity to combine Linux with reconfigurable FPGAs in a wide range of embedded systems and devices. So when Xilinx approached Filippov to write an article about his Xilinx/Linux-based camera for their newsletter, he decided to shift the focus from details of the implementation of his camera, to the more general issues of "open" development tools and software for FPGA-based embedded system design. TimeSys reports 190% design-win growth rate -- TimeSys announced that its embedded Linux and Java design wins nearly doubled between the first and second half of 2002, and continued to grow at that rate during the first quarter of 2003 (Q1 2003). Additionally, the company reports 300% growth over last year's SDK offering. Story
Microsoft unveils $3 Windows CE runtime pricing -- Earlier this week, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates unveiled a revised product structure and highly aggressive runtime pricing for Windows CE .NET, resulting in royalties as low as $3 for the baseline system. The revised pricing model is likely to make Windows CE much more competitive with embedded Linux and other embedded operating system alternatives, say analysts. Story
