Embedded Linux remains #1 choice of developers -- despite tools dissatisfaction -- In a recently concluded survey of embedded developer preferences, Evans Data Corp. Qtopia 1.6 released -- Trolltech released Qtopia 1.6 and announced that there are now over 1000 third-party Qtopia applications available. Qtopia is the application platform used in Sharp's Zaurus PDAs, and in many other consumer devices and embedded systems. Read full story
Sony PlayStation 2 gets Debian-based Linux distro -- This week, xRhino released BlackRhino, a Debian-based Linux OS for the Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) game console. xRhino developed BlackRhino while creating a game title for the PS2, and says they are releasing this distribution at no charge to help encourage the growth of the Linux PS2 development community. Perception of functionality key to PDA market growth -- In-Stat/MDR predicts that lower prices, improved operating systems, and new multimedia and wireless functionality currently being integrated into PDAs will spark market growth this year. PDAs are forecasted to have a healthy 18.3% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the 2002-2007 period, with the highest growth rate anticipated for 2003. Read full story
OpenGL embedded graphics draft standard showcased at GDC -- At the Game Developers Conference this week in San Jose, CA, The Khronos Group is showcasing demos based on a new graphics standard for embedded systems. OpenGL ES is described as a light weight, royalty-free embedded graphics standard that will provide graphics API profiles for a broad range of applications including handheld devices, automotive and avionics displays, and multimedia consumer devices such as digital TVs, set-top boxes, and game consoles.
