New HP consumer entertainment device has Linux inside
HP will unveil a prototype of a new Linux-powered consumer music appliance at the Tech X NY trade show in New York next week. Although the device -- called the HP Digital Entertainment Center -- contains more computing power than most desktop PCs, it is narrowly focused on being a "single function appliance" in which "simplicity and ease-of-use" are paramont.

Compaq announces handheld Linux apps contest
In a press conference held earlier this week, Compaq announced an application contest for Linux-based handheld devices for the purpose of "[driving] development and adoption of Linux applications on handheld devices such as the Compaq iPAQ." Five finalists and one grand prize winner will be announced at LinuxWorld in August 2001.

Open-source music format ready to play
ZDNet's John Borland reports on the latest release of Ogg Vorbis, an open source alternative to MP3. Ogg Vorbis is actually designed to result in better audio quality than MP3 without any of the associated patent royalties for software developers or music distributors. It already has been adopted by a few major software companies, including Sonic Foundry and AOL Time Warner's Winamp, as well as some music sites.
