A Victory for the Software Industry
Matthew Harris' last case as a practicing lawyer was as lead technical litigator in the Caldera antitrust case against Microsoft which ended up with Microsoft making a large payment to Caldera. After reviewing the recent federal appeals court decision in the US vs. Microsoft antitrust case, Harris (who now serves as Lineo's Chief Operating Officer) has decided the decision represents a significant victory for the software industry.

3rd real-time Linux workshop issues call for papers
The Third Real Time Linux Workshop, which is taking place at the Applied Linux and Embedded Internet Conference and Expo in Milan, Italy (November 26-29), has issued a call for technical papers. Desired topics include: real-time Linux applications; real-time Linux contributions; real-time linux implementations (hard, firm, and soft); and work-in-progress reports.

TinyWidgets for Nano-X
TinyWidgets is a new open source project based on a 'C' language widget set for the Microwindows project's Nano-X API. TinyWidgets includes a GUI designer for rapidly developing applications.

NeoMagic unveils Linux-supported SOC for multimedia devices
NeoMagic, well known for their graphics chips and embedded DRAM technology, has announced a new highly integrated system-on-chip for portable multimedia devices. The new SOC contains a 32-bit MIPS CPU, 4MB of embedded DRAM, audio/video controllers, a bunch of other interfaces. Initial embedded software for the new SOC consists of LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux and Trolltech's Qt/Embedded.

MontaVista signs Linux deals, cuts staff
CNET News.com's Stephen Shankland reports that MontaVista Software boasts Toshiba and Ericsson as major new business partners, but has laid off 20 percent of its staff due to the current economic climate.

New conference highlights Open Source innovation
Organizers of a new conference on "Open Innovation" plan to assemble leading thinkers, developers, investors, and entrepreneurs to explore the issues and opportunities for new software directions, and to discuss the business models needed to support growth. The event will take place in Santa Clara, CA (Jul. 31 - Aug. 1). Nolan Bushnell, who has founded over 20 companies including Atari, will give the keynote address.
