NEWS FLASH: ELC releases Embedded Linux Platform Spec V1.0 -- Responding to a clamoring for decisive action, the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC) has completed, approved, and released the first Embedded Linux Platform Specification prior to year-end 2002, as projected earlier this year.

Embedding Debian GNU/Linux in a 32MB CompactFlash -- In this short technical article, Bao C. Ha explains how to squeeze Debian GNU/Linux (and other OSS software) into a 32MB CompactFlash on the OpenBrick-E, a small, fanless, computer system with three built-in Ethernet interfaces. The goal is to create a low-cost, appliance-like VPN/firewall/router system, with the three network interfaces partitioned into Internet, DMZ, and local LAN. Nine week course on Embedded Linux at UCSD extension -- UCSD Extension is offering the "Embedded Linux" course starting January 8, 2003 for nine Wednesday evenings at their North County campus location.  Story

Microsoft's X-Box is defenseless against Linux -- The Financial Times of Germany reports that Linux is now ready to use on the latest Microsoft X-Box, as demonstrated last week at a Chaos Computer Club meeting in Berlin. Microsoft sells the X-Box in Germany for a highly subsidized price, so one can now buy an X-Box and run Linux on it at less than the cost of a similarly configured PC.  Story

Metrowerks to buy Embedix, form Linux Solutions Group -- This article by SD Times editor Edward J. Correia provides some interesting insight into the recently announced acquisition of Embedix Inc. (aka Lineo) by Motorola software tools subsidiary Metrowerks.  Story

Mind breathes new life into eCos -- Mind NV has contracted with Gary Thomas, one of the core architects of eCos (and a former employee of Red Hat and Cygnus Solutions) to expand its eCos support on new and existing platforms, and to develop support for Linux on new PowerPC and other platforms.  Story

Japan backs Open Source consumer electronics -- NE Asia Online reports on comments made by Hidetaka Fukuda, CTO for Japan's Commerce and Information Policy Bureau, Director of IT-Industry Division, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, at "Open Source Way 2002," a conference held recently in Yokohama.  Story

Sharp Re-launches Developer Site -- Sharp has re-launched the Zaurus PDA developer website, now known as "Zaurus DevNet." It includes web-based forums, documentation, software development kit (SDK), and Zaurus ROM image downloads, and has its own SourceForge-based software development center.  Story

VoIP app turns Sharp Zaurus PDA into an Internet phone -- theKompany.com has announced their latest product for the Sharp Zaurus Linux based PDA. "tkcPhone" is a Voice over IP (VoIP) application that allows you to use your Zaurus as a phone, either to make free calls between computers, or to make PC to phone calls through an exchange like Net2Phone.  Story

Embedded Linux in academia -- the problem and potential solutions -- In this guest editorial, Richard Sevenich addresses a perceived need that has arisen with the rather sudden proliferation of embedded systems that deploy full fledged operating systems, such as Linux. The intent is to initiate a discussion in hopes of eventually meeting the perceived need. The hope is that this is really an opportunity for the embedded Linux community.  Story
