Wind River partners with Red Hat on embedded Linux distro/support -- Wind River unveiled a dual operating system strategy this week that adds a newly developed embedded Linux distribution -- "Red Hat Embedded Linux" -- alongside its proprietary VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS). Additionally, the company said it will soon release a new Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) that targets development of embedded systems and devices running both Linux and VxWorks; that it will offer support for both OSes within its set of application- and market-specific embedded software "platforms"; and that it has added a new option of per-developer-seat licensing as an alternative to the traditional royalty-based licensing model for its VxWorks RTOS.
Industrial programmable terminal runs embedded Linux on ARM -- AML's M7140 is an inexpensive programmable stationary terminal for fixed station, wired, or wireless data collection applications. The M7140 runs embedded Linux, and targets work-in-process tracking, shop floor control, and factory automation. MontaVista updates its consumer electronics Linux -- MontaVista has released a substantial update to its Linux distribution for consumer electronics devices. The new version of MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition provides general Linux updates, security and reliability enhancements including a new high-security filesystem, faster boot and application launch times, and support for MontaVista's Eclipse-based "DevRocket" development tool.
Embeddable browser project hits milestone release, seeks funding -- The Dillo project to build a small, fast, lightweight, standards-compliant embeddable Web browser has released a new version with "the largest set of improvements, ever." Dillo 0.8 includes a better, daemon-based plug-in architecture and several new plugins, among other new features.
Open palmtop environment for Linux gains SDK, IDE -- The Open Palmtop Integrated Environment (Opie) project to develop a free graphical application environment for Linux handhelds and webpads has released a software development kit (SDK) based on the KDevelop3 open source IDE. The Opie SDK provides tools for developing open, professional-class applications for Linux based mobile and embedded devices running on the Opie platform.
An introduction to Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless -- Intel recently outlined plans to drive the development of a complete, standards-based, common platform for ultra wideband (UWB) wireless technology. Intel says future UWB technology-based products built on this platform will enable high-speed transfer of multimedia content between devices in the home or office, at lower costs and without the hassle of wires. This technical whitepaper introduces UWB, its applications, and its underlying technologies.
