Japan to invest millions in Linux for consumer devices -- Japan is reportedly about to begin investing over $8 million (USD) in the development of Linux-based operating system software for consumer devices.  Story

Introducing the Equinox ESP-2 MI -- a 2-port serial-to-LAN adapter -- LinuxDevices.com takes a look at a new serial-to-LAN adapter based on an embedded Motorola Coldfire microprocessor running uClinux. This 'device profile' briefly covers the functions of the device, its internal hardware and software, and why Linux was selected as its embedded operating system.  Story

Linux powers new distributed data acquisition/control device -- SIXNET unveiled the latest member of its SixTRAK IPm Open Controller family: the SixTRAK IPm Open DCS Controller, a small device used for process control, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition), and DCS (distributed control system) applications. The highly compact device features a built-in PowerPC processor and embedded Linux operating system.  Story

TimeSys releases free beta of Eclipse-based IDE with Linux SDK -- TimeSys Corp. announced beta availability of its first integrated development environment (IDE) for embedded software development powered by Eclipse technology, an open-source universal platform for tools integration. A free download of the new IDE is available which includes TimeSys Linux GPL, an SDK for x86 platforms, along with complete documentation.  Story

Port of uClinux to Apple iPod! -- A new project is porting uClinux to the Apple iPod. Currently, it is bootable, supports IDE data transfers, and has basic video and audio support. According to the project leader, "lots of work remains to be done." Maybe you want to help?  Story

More Linux fun with Microsoft's Xbox: building a Linux cluster -- Adam Cecchetti was walking back from class, thinking to himself that he hadn't done much in the way of parallel computing lately. So he decided it would be an interesting idea to test the usefulness of the Xbox platform as a cluster node.  Story

Multifunction gateway/router reference design targets "connected home" -- Philips announced a new Linux-based hardware/software reference design that is intended to help companies rapidly develop SOHO routers and residential gateways that support multiple wireless electronic devices and multiple cordless handsets.  Story

Embedded and kernel development track at fosdem 2003 -- This year's fosdem (Free and Open Source Software DEvelopers Meeting) conference in Brussels (Feb. 8-9) has a new track devoted to open hardware development, embedded Linux, eCos, embedded JVM, and embedded tool chains. If you're in Belgium, be sure to attend!  Story

IBM and VCs form (Linux oriented) "Telecom Venture Coalition" -- TVC's stated goal is to accelerate customer adoption of new, global communications technologies and next-generation Linux solutions by connecting emerging VC portfolio companies with IBM at an early stage in their growth. Multimodal browser technology to bring XHTML+Voice to devices -- A new, downloadable Multimodal Browser and Toolkit from IBM and Opera Software allows the development and execution of applications written to the W3C Acknowledged Submission called XHTML+Voice (X+V). This technology can reportedly be used to enable access to Web and voice information from a single mobile device.  Story

MontaVista boasts 2002's revenue was 200% of 2001's -- MontaVista Software issued a statement this week outlining its accomplishments for 2002. Among other successes, the company said it ended its 2002 fiscal year with (unspecified) revenues doubling those of 2001, despite the general economic downturn. No word on the size of 2002 revenues or when the company expects to reach profitability.  Story

New Coldfire-based development kit for uClinux apps -- A new uClinux development kit from Finland supports uClinux-based system development. The kit includes a small Motorola Coldfire-based single-board computer, sample apps, drivers, a carrier board, power supply, cables, documentation, and a uClinux development toolchain.  Story

Chorus OS creators unveil real-time, high availability Linux -- Jaluna-2 will be available as an open-sourced, royalty-free set of operating system components and tools. It will include an embedded Linux distribution, the C5 micro-kernel (derived from the 5th generation of Sun's ChorusOS), and a host-target integrated development and configuration environment.  Story

Linux device driver development class announced -- K Computing announced a Linux device driver development class taught by Kevin Dankwardt, to be held in the Washington D.C. area during the week of March 31 - April 4, 2003.  Story
