Meet the "mine" -- a Linux-based data storage/record/playback device -- This article introduces the Terapin "mine" -- a hand-held, Internet-enabled, personal data storage and record/playback device with a built-in 10 GB HDD that holds thousands of digital photographs and audio tracks, plus lots of other data. To encourage the world-wide developer community to create apps for the device, Terapin has launched a developer website and is offering developers the special discount price of $399 and a free SDK.  Story

TI taps MontaVista for OMAP Linux support -- MontaVista Software announced embedded Linux support for TI's OMAP application processors, which target 2.5G/3G handsets, specialized PDAs, telematics, biometrics, and gaming devices. TI had previously relied on RidgeRun's DSPLinux for embedded Linux support of its dual-core processors, but RidgeRun ran into financial difficulties and ceased operation earlier this year.  Story

Axis launches single-chip embedded Linux system -- Axis Communications is now shipping the new ETRAX multi-chip module. The device combines the monolithic, highly integrated ETRAX 100LX RISC processor plus 2MB Flash, 8MB SDRAM, and an Ethernet transceiver into a single IC package. Only two external components are supposedly required to create a fully functional Linux system: a 20MHz crystal and a source of 3.3 V power.  Story

Virtual MIPS 'Malta' platform supports Linux-based device development -- A new evaluation and development environment from Virtio Corp. lets engineers conduct hands-on evaluations of operating systems, tool chains, and applications on a virtual Malta Development Board. Embedded Linux target OS support is available in the form of LynuxWorks BlueCat Linux.  Story

uClinux supports new Hitachi H8S microcontroller -- Hitachi announced the H8S/2674R, a new 33 MHz 16-bit microcontroller which targets printers, scanners, fax machines, network-enabled devices, and low-end multimedia and handheld products. The chip includes DMA, counter/timers, analog I/O, and lots of digital I/O, and is supported by a uClinux port from Arizona Cooperative Power.  Story

Overview of Mono -- This article ("The Penguin takes flight") at Business 2.0 magazine provides background and perspective on Mono, an open source project to create an open source, Linux-compatible alternative to Microsoft's .NET Framework.  Story

Blind Men, Embedded Platforms, and RTOS Elephants -- EE Times editor Bernard Cole examines the significance of recent announcements by Wind River and Green Hills regarding vertical market software bundles for the embedded systems market, comparing it to the importance of the availability of source code from Embedded Linux vendors and some RTOS companies.  Story

LynuxWorks unveils new pricing, source code availability programs -- LynuxWorks introduced a new pricing model for its LynxOS RTOS in order to improve its ability to compete for design wins in low-priced consumer devices. Called "MSRP-based pricing," the model bases royalties on a percentage of the list price of the target device. Additionally, LynuxWorks introduced a source code availability program.  Story

Sharp Zaurus SL-C700 to debut in US soon -- The new Sharp Zaurus SL-C700 Linux PDA (with mini notebook style keyboard and 640x480 pixel LCD display) will be available worldwide in an English language version from Dynamism Inc., beginning in Q1 of 2003.  Story

Bluetooth developer kit plugs into Sharp Zaurus -- A Bluetooth developers kit from Pellico Systems gives Sharp Zaurus developers a jump start into the the world of Bluetooth technologies. The kit contains two modules which transparently act like an RS-232 cable replacement (no special software drivers are required).  Story

uClinux training comes to Munich -- A four-day uClinux workshop will be held in Munich, Germany on Jan. 28-31, 2003. The presenters will cover the complete development cycle in detail, including hands-on deployment on an ARM7-based embedded target system. And you get to keep the target system after the workshop is over!  Story

LynuxWorks to develop DO-178B certifiable POSIX-compatible RTOS -- LynuxWorks announced an agreement to obtain Rockwell Collins' Virtual Machine Operating System (VMOS) technology, enabling the creation of a new DO-178B level A certifiable version of LynxOS, LynuxWorks' POSIX-compatible RTOS. The new RTOS is scheduled for completion during the first half of 2003.  Story
