Embedded Linux Platform Spec achieves 'strawman' phase -- Meeting nine times since kickoff in March, the Embedded Linux Consortium's Core Platform Working Group has achieved consensus on a strawman specification. The document will soon circulate for comment among member companies under the organization's intellectual property rules. This cycle will enable the group to build a completed core platform specification for the global embedded Linux community by year's end. A difficult but worthy goal, the Core Platform is expected to bring order to the market by reducing concerns and silencing competitive disinformation about operating system fragmentation and support. LinuxWorld 2002 San Francisco Special Report -- This week's annual San Francisco LinuxWorld extravaganza inspired the customary agglomeration of announcements of Linux-related products, technologies, strategies, relationships, and accomplishments. Building on the growing trend of major software and systems companies jumping on the Linux bandwagon, both Sun Microsystems and Oracle added their voices to the Linux chorus -- with both Sun's McNealy and Oracle's Ellison delivering rousing LinuxWorld keynotes. (Recent LinuxWorlds witnessed strong Linux endorsements from computing world powerhouses IBM, HP, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Sharp, and others.) This year, even Microsoft apparently felt a need to get in on the action (though not as a Linux backer), which they accomplished via a small (10 x 20 ft.) booth where seven Microsoft staffers sported tee shirts bearing the slogan "Flexibility, Community, Interoperability" and interacted with hoards of Linux enthusiasts.
