Pushing Linux into embedded devices -- CNET's Stephen Shankland offers his impressions of Linux becoming part of the mainstream effort to create software for non-PC "embedded" computing devices, as indicated by the many Linux-related announcements that accompanied last week's Embedded Systems Conference. story

A penguinppc.org perspective on ESC -- penguinppc.org published a story by Mark Hatle about last week's Embedded Systems Conference, from the PowerPC/Linux perspective. Hatle (who works for MontaVista) summarizes the Linux offerings he saw at ESC -- especially the PowerPC based solutions -- and offers a few opinions. story

Group proposes Embedded Linux standard -- EE Times editor Charles J. Murray reports on the proposal of the ELC Platform Specification, and the accompanying discussion, at last week's Embedded Linux Consortium meeting. story

Embedded Linux to power memory emulator debugging tool -- Grammer Engine has announced that its next generation PromICE debugging tool will add Ethernet/Web connectivity and will contain an Embedded Linux operating system. The new capabilities are based on an embedded NetSilicon NET+ARM processor running uClinux. story

Jungo expands features of driver development tools -- version 5.0 of the WinDriver and KernelDriver tools that automate and simplify the development of Linux device drivers now provide an easier-to-use graphical interface. story

Timing and schedulability tools support Embedix -- Tri-Pacific Software announced plans to port its timing and schedulability tool suite, RapidRMA, to Lineo's Embedded Linux platform. story

Qt/Embedded to be bundled with BlueCat Linux -- Trolltech and LynuxWorks have announced an agreement whereby Qt/Embedded will soon be included with LynuxWorks' BlueCat Linux OS. story

New J2ME virtual machine supports Embedded Linux -- Elmic Systems announced eVM, which has functionality compatible with Sun's K Virtual Machine (KVM), but offers additional, robust capabilities that enable networking and easy integration with Linux. story

CodeWarrior IDE to support BlueCat Linux -- the popular Metrowerks CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (IDE) will soon support developers using Linux and Solaris host environments and deploying on LynxOS and BlueCat Linux targets. story

PersonalJava compatible implementation for Embedded Linux -- Insignia unveiled the Jeode platform for Linux, a PersonalJava-compatible implementation that provides complete AWT graphics capability for high-end embedded Linux-based devices through its use of the full X Window system graphical standard. story

BlueCat Linux now supports MIPS processors -- LynuxWorks released a new version of BlueCat Linux with MIPS support. With BlueCat Linux 3.1, LynuxWorks now claims the broadest microprocessor support for embedded Linux. story

Bluetooth SDK gains Embedded Linux support -- Extended Systems has begun shipping Version 1.2.1 of XTNDAccess Blue SDK, a multi-purpose software development kit (SDK) for implementing Bluetooth wireless protocols in handheld devices. XTNDAccess Blue SDK 1.2.1 is based on the recently released Bluetooth specification version 1.1 and supports Embedded Linux. story

Embedded Linux development kit supports Altera Nios -- Microtronix and Altera Corporation announced a Linux Development Kit (LDK) for Altera's Nios embedded processor core. The new kit gives designers using Embedded Linux access to Altera's leading programmable logic products, as well as Excalibur embedded processor "system-on-a-programmable-chip" (SOPC) solutions. story

Real-Time Java reference implementation due soon -- TimeSys Corporation plans to deliver a complete Reference Implementation of the Real-Time Specification for Java (JSR-00001) to the Expert Group of the Java Community Process (JCP) on April 30th, 2001 for its evaluation. This release is a significant milestone in the open and inclusive JCP process that will include a reference implementation, a final release of the specification, which has gone through public review and comment, and a test suite. story

New Embedded Linux supports high-end handheld PCs -- Mizi Research introduced Linuette V1.0, a specialized Linux OS which provides enhanced multimedia capabilities tailored to the requirements of high-end PDAs and handheld PCs. story

TUXIA launches Embedded Linux for Internet appliances -- TUXIA announced the launch of TASTE, a suite of embedded Linux software for Internet appliances and network computing devices, such as WebPADs, TV set-top boxes, thin clients and screen phones. TASTE, which stands for TUXIA Appliance Synthesis Technology, is based on the new Linux kernel version 2.4 and features a Mozilla browser, middleware, and a full complement of plug-ins and other enhancements. story

MontaVista GPLs PICMG hot swap technology -- MontaVista Software has submitted its hot swap infrastructure code to the Open Source Community. MontaVista is releasing the hot swap code as a project on Source Forge with two goals: to encourage a wide adoption of the base software, and to promote the development of the infrastructure for fault-resilience and high availability. story

New set of Embedded Linux "board development kits" -- Lineo announced the Lineo Embedix Board Development Kit (BDK), a complete development environment for configuring, customizing, and deploying Linux-based embedded solutions. Each BDK is tailored to a specific single-board computer or microprocessor reference platform. story
