Linux enables Matsushita's new broadband TV tuner -- Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic) has incorporated MontaVista's embedded Linux operating system as the embedded software platform in a new broadband TV tuner, called Broadnow, which was recently introduced in Japan. The device is said to be the first in a new Matsushita family of broadband-connected TV products.  Read full story

uClinux enables 1-chip Wi-Fi access point reference design -- Intersil says its new Wi-Fi system-on-chip controller represents the world's most highly integrated access point silicon solution, providing both wireless and Ethernet connectivity and a built-in ARM9 CPU core. The chip's reference design software platform is based on uClinux.  Read full story

AMD unveils Linux-based "access equipment" reference design -- AMD's new hardware/software reference design for developing "access equipment" based on its Alchemy Solutions Au1500 MIPS32 processor includes an embedded Linux-based software stack. The design targets data- and voice-enabled wireless access points, gateways, routers/firewalls, IADs, cable MTAs, IP-telephony devices, and IP-PBXs.  Read full story

"Embedded Ethernet" hardware/software kit features Linux -- Embedded Solutions AG announced a low-cost hardware/software kit for creating Linux-based embedded systems with Ethernet connectivity. The kit includes a small ARM7-based processor module, a baseboard, and a uCLinux-based embedded Linux software package.  Read full story

Lineo uSolutions announces embedded Linux kernel, IDE, plans -- The Tokyo descendent of Lineo Inc. unveiled its first embedded Linux product -- an implementation that supports Toshiba's recently announced TX7901 MIPS processor. Additionally, the company rolled out what it calls a modular, Java-based integrated cross-development environment for embedded Linux application development.  Read full story

Linux enables new Internet/DVD player -- A new Linux-based set-top box has been announced which is roughly the size of a normal DVD player, and combines the functions of DVD player and Internet access. Consumers can use the new device to browse the web, play streaming media, access their email, watch DVDs, and "even sing karaoke from any television."  Read full story

Embedded Systems Conference reveals "Best of Show" finalists -- finalists for the ESC "Best of Show" awards, selected from among the exhibitors at next week's Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in San Francisco, have been announced. The finalists, which represent fourteen end-products based on the exhibitors' products, span a broad range of interesting applications for embedded systems, including some very cool devices!  Read full story

Toasting mp3's with Linux -- As an exercise in embedded system design, Michael Palmer set out to develop the "mp3 Toaster." Palmer's project combines embedded hardware with Open Source software (Linux, LAME, Netjuke, Lirc) to create a computing appliance that operates without the need for a keyboard, mouse, or monitor.  Read full story

Open Media Toolkit goes GPL -- The Open Media toolkit (OMT), a platform independent C++ framework for 2D/3D multimedia applications, has recently been released under the GNU General Public License. OMT has reportedly been used to develop a number of commercial applications including games from Disney, Hasbro, Mattel, Scitex, and HumanCode. It appears that there is not an existing Linux port . . . yet.  Read full story

New MPEG-4 support for Linux-based embedded devices -- Tvia, a manufacturer of multimedia display processor chips, announced new embedded MPEG-4 software support for consumer devices such as enhanced DVD players, interactive TVs, set-top boxes, information appliances, and mobile devices.  Read full story
