Microsoft grants "full access" to Windows CE source -- Microsoft has "dropped the other shoe", as it were, announcing the first source code sharing program for its Windows CE embedded OS (or any OS, for that matter) that allows developers and manufacturers to actually redistribute modified OS code in real commercial products. Honeywell adds Linux to building automation -- Honeywell will soon be adding a Linux-based controller to its building automation solutions product line, according to the software firm that recently completed development of the device's embedded Linux operating system. "The broad range of software protocols available under Linux [enabled] a number of new features for our building automation systems," commented the Honeywell manager responsible for European automation product development. Alcatel adopts Linux for next generation telecom equipment -- MontaVista Software's carrier grade Linux will be used as a building block for Alcatel's next-generation telecommunications equipment that have embedded or real-time constraints, according to an announcement made by the two companies. The companies have signed "a major multi-year corporate contract" for MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition (CGE), a Linux-based software platform for telecommunications applications, the announcement said. The dawn of the "Post-PC" era? -- The "Post-PC" era may be near at hand, according to the findings of a recently completed market study. The study projects that Windows CE-based devices may outsell Windows-based PCs within 5 years. According to the report, Microsoft has made "tremendous progress", and only embedded Linux is poised to represent a major long-term across-the-board competitor to Microsoft. Read full story
4th-generation digital logging and archiving system runs Linux -- This LinuxDevices.com "device profile" describes what has been called the first mission-critical digital voice logging recorder and archiving system based on a Linux software platform. The device can record up to 160 channels of input, and is intended for public health, safety, and security applications. Read full story
Linux gains support for latest DiskOnChip flash technology -- SnapGear announced that it has developed the first open source support for the M-Systems "Millennium Plus" DiskOnChip flash memory devices and INFTL (Inverse NAND Flash Translation Layer) flash management technology. Previous to this, there was no support for the DiskOnChip/INFTL combination in the Linux MTD (Memory Technology Device) subsystem, SnapGear said. Read full story
SuperH, TimeSys partner for SH-4, SH-5 embedded Linux -- SuperH says it will supply TimeSys' embedded Linux SDKs for its SH-4 processor cores, and the two companies will jointly develop embedded Linux support for upcoming SH-5 cores.
