Network appliance offers Xeon CPU, security coprocessor

Win Enterprises announced a 2U rackmount networking appliance that supports Intel processors ranging from a dual-core Pentium on up to a quad-core Xeon. The PL-80160 supports up to 16GB of DDR3 memory, includes CompactFlash and 3.5-inch hard disk storage, offers eight to 32 gigabit Ethernet ports, and includes PCI and PCI Express expansion, the company says.
Building on earlier networking appliances from Win Enterprises -- such as last month's PL-80230 and last year's PL-81040 -- the PL-80160 is available with an optional Cavium Nitrox PX cn16xx security coprocessor, which is said to be capable of processing IPsec and other protocols independently. Win Enterprises says the PL-80160 includes Intel's 3450 chipset, and is available with many LGA1156-socketed CPUs, including: dual-core Pentiums; Cores in i3, i5, and i7 flavors; and Xeons. The device is said to be capable of accepting up to 16GB of error-correcting 800/1066/1333MHz DDR3 memory via four DIMM slots. Onboard storage may be provided by a 3.5-inch SATA hard disk drive or a Type II CompactFlash slot, Win Enterprises adds.  The Win Enterprises PL-80160 (Click to enlarge) By default, the PL-80160 (above) comes with six ports for copper gigabit Ethernet and two SFP (small form factor pluggable) ports, according to Win Enterprises. Two PCI Express x8 slots (one with a "golden finger" interface) allow adding expansion modules, for a total of 32 copper gigabit ports or 26 optical ports, the company adds. In order to prevent network problems if the device shuts down, the PL-80160 is equipped with two segments of LAN bypass functionality through WDT and GPIO pin definitions, Win Enterprises says. Also featured are redundant ATX power supplies, the company notes. In addition to the ports that have already been mentioned, the PL-80160's front panel also includes a 2 by 16-character display, two USB ports, and a RJ45 port for a serial console. Internally, there are headers for another USB port and for a second serial port, adds Win Enterprises. According to Win Enterprises, the PL-80160 includes dual cooling fans and operates in temperatures ranging from 32 to 104 deg. F. Power consumption was not quantified, but will obviously depend in part on the chosen CPU.
