New Linux show calls for papers

The Linux Foundation is soliciting speakers for LinuxCon, a "brand new" annual technical conference, planned for Sep. 21-25 in Portland, Ore. The event is expected to draw core developers, administrators, end-users, community managers, and industry experts, and will include a mobile/embedded track, the...

Foundation said.

The timing might be pretty good, given that IDG's LinuxWorld, long the biggest show on the Linux circuit, has turned into "OpenSource World". Co-located with a Next-generation Datacenter show, LinuxWorld has also had an increasingly business- and enterprise-oriented flavor in recent years, despite organizer efforts to include more cool Linux start-ups and expand the .org Pavilion.

According to the LF, LinuxCon aims to fill the current gap for a "comprehensive" and "high-quality" event at which users and developers meet and collaborate. Co-location with the annual, and well-established, Linux Plumbers Conference (LPC) should ensure that plenty of actual kernel hackers will be on hand.

LinuxCon's topical focus, however, ranges far beyond the Linux kernel. Topical areas of interest are described as:

Enterprise computing
Mobile/embedded arena
Cloud computing
Virtualization

The event is to feature five tracks with "over 75" presentations between them. Tutorials, BoF (birds-of-a-feather) sessions, "mini-summits," keynotes, roundtables, and product/technology showcases are also planned menu items.

To fill the speaker slots, the LF is calling for papers that might interest the following audience groups:

Developer (kernel, core development, software engineering)
Operations (sys admin and management, systems architecture, Linux migration and deployment)
Business (open source governance, enterprise, ecosystem)

The deadline for submission is Apr. 15. Tax day (in the U.S.) is also the deadline for discounted ($300) tickets. More details should be found here.
