Linux luminaries ready to talk plumbing

Early-bird registration has been extended to Aug. 5 for the Linux Plumbers Conference (LPC). Scheduled for Sept. 23-25 in Portland, Oregon, the conference will feature keynotes and presentations from Linus Torvalds, Federal CIO Vivek Kundra, and Intel's Keith Packard, covering Linux "plumbing" issues such as kernel subsystems and core libraries.

Like last year's LPC event, the conference features keynotes, microconference tracks, working sessions, plus evening events about the Linux kernel, core libraries, windowing systems, and other elemental components of Linux. Sponsors are said to include Intel, Qualcomm, IBM, HP, Google, Novell, Canonical, Wind River, LWN.net, Linux Journal, and Linux Magazine.

Linux founder Linus Torvalds (pictured) once again acts as the big-name draw, but instead of offering a keynote, he will deliver an advanced tutorial on the Linux kernel's "Git" system for distributed source code management and version control.

A keynote will be provided by Intel 's X Window guru, Keith Packard, and, although it hasn't yet been confirmed, the organizers hope to have Federal CIO Vivek Kundra via a live video address, followed by real-time Q&A. Other presenters tapped so far include Linux luminaries such as the Linux Driver Project's Greg Kroah-Hartman and official Linux embedded maintainer David Woodhouse.

Submissions have been closed for presentation proposals, and a detailed agenda is yet to be published. However, topics accepted to this point are said to include:

Git (Linus Torvalds)
Security (James Morris and Paul Moore)
Boot and Init (Dave Jones)
X Window System (Keith Packard)
Embedded Systems (Greg Kroah-Hartman and David Woodhouse)
Audio (Lennart Poettering)

Availability

The Linux Plumbers Conference is scheduled for September 23-25 at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland, Oregon. The early-bird registration rate of $275 will end at midnight on Aug. 5, Pacific Time, followed by the regular registration rate of $325, and a late rate of $400 starting Sept. 21. The student rate is $100.
