Intel's IDF to focus on Atom ecosystem and Sandy Bridge

Intel Corp. announced open registration and keynotes for its 13th annual technical conference, which returns to San Francisco on Sept. 13-15. Promised for the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) are a keynote from CEO Paul Otellini on the "Computing Continuum," as well as a keynote and track on the Intel Atom, and a track on the chipmaker's "Sandy Bridge" micro-architecture.

Held once again at Moscone Center West, the IDF will explore Intel’s technology and platform roadmap directions for the next year and beyond in the areas of digital enterprise, mobility, embedded and communications, software, manufacturing, and research, says Intel.

In addition to offering keynotes, "Insight" sessions, and technology tracks, the IDF will also offer the Industry Technology Showcase, an exposition of Intel-related products from leading technology companies. In addition, Intel plans a series of "Intel Fellows: Live and Uncensored" sessions, in which attendees can ask Intel's most senior technologists questions, "no holds barred," says the company.

CEO and President Paul Otellini (pictured at right) will give the opening day keynote on the topic of Intel's role in the "Computing Continuum," followed by a "deep-dive" on the theme by David Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager, Intel Architecture Group, says Intel.

The following day, Doug Davis, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Embedded and Communications Group, and Renee James, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Software and Solutions Group, will jointly deliver a keynote on an unnamed topic. James (left) oversees Intel's embedded Linux and VxWorks software subsidiary Wind River Systems, as well as middleware subsidiary, "Havoc."

The third day's keynote will be given by Justin Rattner, vice president and director of Intel Labs, as well as Intel’s chief technology officer and an Intel Senior Fellow. Rattner will address "the near and not-so-near future."

Once again, Intel will host several Insight sessions, including a first-day session by Intel Fellow Thomas Piazza and Opher Kahn, senior principal engineer, regarding the "Sandy Bridge" Intel microarchitecture. Due in early 2011, the Sandy Bridge family of Intel Core processors will offer greater processor performance, power conservation, and enhanced graphics capabilities, among other benefits, says Intel.

Also on Sept. 13 will be an Insight session by Intel Chief Information Officer Diane Bryant on "the challenges and opportunities facing IT." On the second day, Intel will host an Insight session focused on software.

At IDF 2010, Intel will host technical tracks on the following topics:

Intel Solid-State Drive (SSD) technology
PCI Express
"Sandy Bridge"
SuperSpeed USB
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface
Visual computing

This year's IDF Gold sponsors are Cisco Systems, Citrix Systems., EMC, IBM, Microsoft, Rambus, Samsung, Supermicro, and Intel's Wind River. The Silver sponsors are DTS, Hynix Semiconductor, Lenovo Group, Symantec, and VMware, says Intel.

At last year's IDF event, Intel launched an Intel Atom Developer Program. The company also demonstrated a telephony oriented Moblin 2.1 for Handhelds, which formed the basis for this year's x86 version of the MeeGo Handset environment. In addition, the chipmaker announced new details on 22-nanomter (nm) fabrication techniques, its "Clarksfield" and "Arrandale" processor families, as well as Intel "Microservers."

Stated Mark Erwin, IDF global events manager, "You want to be there when the future happens. IDF is your chance to collaborate with peers, experience the latest technology and exchange ideas about the future."
