2009-08-25
Brazilian independent software vendor (ISV) Handcase has ported 60 applications from PalmOS to the Android and Moblin platforms, with another 40 said to be on the way. The apps are available in English via web-based subscriptions, in a variety of free, advertising-driven, and paid plans.
In January, Handcase announced it was porting about 100 of its catalog of 346 PalmOS applications to the Linux-based WebOS platform for the Palm Pre. Handcase also announced it was translating some 323 of its PalmOS apps from Portuguese to English. Now 60 of these apps are said to be available for two other mobile Linux stacks: the Google-sponsored Android mobile platform, as well as the netbook- and MID-oriented Moblin platform, sponsored by the Linux Foundation and backed by Intel. LiMo (Linux Mobile) ports, meanwhile, are said to be in the works. Handcase's HandFleet fleet management app has been ported to Android and Moblin Subscription options are said to include mobile-phone "skins," as well as tools to create mobile social networks around particular apps. The software is also available to carriers, which can offer customized versions, says the company.
