Shenzhen-based Eken announced a seven-inch tablet computer that runs either Android or Windows CE 6.0. The M001 has a 600MHz ARM-based processor, 128MB of RAM and 2GB of flash storage, an SD slot, stereo speakers, and 802.11b/g wireless networking, the company says.

Eken's M001 is an attempt to tap into the market created by Apple's iPad, judging by the screen (complete with iPad label!) the company has Photoshopped onto the device (below). Instead of running the iPhone OS, however, the M001 is available with either Android or Windows CE, Eken claims.

The M001 is said to have a seven-inch touchscreen -- resistive, we presume, though no details were given -- with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. According to Eken, the tablet uses a 600MHz Via "MW8505" processor. We take this to be the same CPU referred to by some other Chinese manufacturers as the VT8505, which is a version of the ARM9-based Prizm 8510 announced last year by Via subsidiary WonderMedia Technologies.

The M001 is said to be equipped with 128GB of RAM, 2GB of flash storage, and an SD card reader that supports up to 32GB. Also included are 802.11b/g wireless networking, a microphone input, a headphone output, and a "30-pin" interface, the latter apparently for a docking station that has yet to be announced. However, no details of the tablet's battery life are provided.

The AliExpress.com website, which is selling what appears to be the same device under Ixsoon branding rather than Eken, offers some additional pictures and details of the included Android software, though no mention of Windows CE. An oddity of the sample pictured there and in the video below is three excessively bright status LEDs, which appear to shine though the tablet's case.

Availability

Eken did not cite pricing or availability for the M001, but the company's product page for the device may be found here. The company did say that the Windows CE 6.0 version costs approximately $2.20 more than the Android-ready model, or $11 extra if users want a web browser to be included.
