Rugged box computer loads up on serial I/O

Axiomtek announced a fanless box computer notable for its extensive serial connectivity. The eBOX622-831-FL is equipped with an Intel 945GSE Express chipset, supports an Intel Atom N270 processor with up to 2GB DDR2 memory, and offers a front-accessible CompactFlash socket, SATA storage, two gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and six serial ports, says the company.

Touted for its noiseless operation, low power consumption, and flexible mounting options, the RoHS-compliant eBOX622-831-FL is best suited for use in automation controllers, digital signage, car PCs, medical healthcare devices, and entry-level gaming, says Axiomtek. The computer is quite similar to Axiomtek's recent eBOX621-831-FL computer, but, most notably, offers twice the number of serial ports.

The eBOX622-831-FL is equipped with an Intel 945GSE Express northbridge and ICH7M southbridge, supporting the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, says the company. A single 200-pin SODIMM is said to support up to 2GB of DDR2 memory.

Storage options include a front-facing CompactFlash slot that can hold cards with up to 8GB, and a 2.5-inch hard disk drive bay that can harbor up to 512MB of SATA storage, says Axiomtek.

The generous allotment of I/O is said to include dual gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and six RS232 COM ports. In addition, the computer supplies PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, a VGA port, audio mic and line-out ports, and a watchdog timer, says the company.

eBOX622-831-FL on the flip side

This rugged, 7.9 x 4.7 x 3.0-inch (200 x 120 x 75mm) embedded computer weighs 4.2 pounds (1.9 kg), says Axiomtek. The computer can be DIN-rail-mounted, wall-mounted, VESA-mounted, or stand-mounted, says the company.

Offering AC 90~264V power input and DC12V@5A output, the eBOX622-831-FL can withstand operating temperatures of -4 to 176 deg. F (-20 to 80 deg. C), says Axiomtek. Vibration resistance is rated at 2 Grms (5-500Hz, X, Y, Z directions) when used with CompactFlash storage only.

Stated Ray Chang, product manager of the Applied Computer & Network Device Business Unit at Axiomtek, "With all electronics well-protected in the extremely rugged aluminum and cold-rolled steel housing, this durable unit is presenting extremely reliability, robust design, fanless operation and complete expandability for using in harsh environments."

Availability

The eBOX622-831-FL will be available around the end of August, supporting Linux, Windows CE, and Windows XP Embedded (XPE), says Axiomtek, which did not list pricing. More information may be found here.
