Fanless PC fits inside automation equipment

Advantech announced a fanless industrial PC that may be rack-mounted, used as a desktop, or "embedded in larger equipment." The IPC-100-60SE includes a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive and a slim optical drive, plus PCI and Mini PCI Express expansion slots, the company says.
According to Advantech, its new IPC-100-60SE runs fanlessly, and may be used as a stand-alone device or can be encased inside automation equipment. The PC is "suitable for space-critical and silent industrial applications," the company says. Support is listed only for several versions of Windows, but Linux and other x86 compatible operating systems should be able to run on the computer as well.  Advantech's IPC-100-60SE Advantech says the IPC-100-60SE, which has a 1U form factor (19 x 11.4 x 1.7 inches), incorporates a previously released Mini-ITX motherboard. While the board wasn't named, we feel confident in nominating the company's AIMB-212 (below), which was launched in January, since that device not only includes the cited chipset but also offers the relevant layout of real-world ports.  Advantech's AIMB-212 The 6.7 x 6.7-inch AIMB-212 has a single 200-pin DIMM slot that accepts up to 2GB of memory, and it offers both 32-bit PCI and Mini PCI Express expansion slots. As pictured above, the AIMB-212's "coastline" includes a VGA port, two Ethernet ports, four USB 2.0 ports, three serial ports (2 RS232, 1 RS232/422/485), and audio I/O (mic in, line out, and line in). Meanwhile, internal connectors add four additional USB 2.0 ports, three more serial ports (RS232), and two SATA ports, according to Advantech.  Advantech's IPC-100 (Click to enlarge) The picture above suggests that the AIMB-212 fits neatly into the IPC-100-60SE, which accordingly benefits from almost all of the board's capabilities. (The AIMB-212 is said to have a CompactFlash slot and a header for LVDS video, however, neither of which is listed in the IPC-100-60SE's specs.) According to Advantech, the IPC-100-60SE has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom D410 processor, along with the ICH-8M I/O controller. The device accepts up to 2GB of RAM via a single SODIMM slot, the company adds. The IPC-100-60SE provides room for a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive, with "anti-vibration" mounting, plus a slimline optical disk drive (neither appears to be standard with the PC, however). The rear panel (below) sports three serial ports (one RS232/422/485, one RS232), a VGA output (supporting resolutions up to 1400 x 1050 pixels), two gigabit Ethernet ports, four USB ports, plus a microphone input and a line output. The IPC-100-60SE also includes an internal Mini PCI Express slot, according to Advantech. The IPC-100-60SE's front panel offers LEDs for monitoring power and disk drive status, plus two additional USB ports. The latter are said to be supplemented by two internal USB connections, no doubt usable for adding wireless networking dongles or flash storage. According to Advantech, the IPC-100-60SE has an operating range of 32 to 104 deg. F (0 to 40 deg. C). If the device is operated in an environment without any air flow, maximum temperature should be no higher than 77 deg. F (25 deg. C), the company adds.
