Fanless controller has multiple serial ports
2012-01-20
Aaeon announced a fanless controller that features a dual-core Intel Atom D525 processor and an operating range from -4 to 140 deg. F. The AEC-6612 Rev.B includes a CompactFlash slot and room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive, up to six serial ports and six USB ports, two gigabit Ethernet ports, and optional Wi-Fi, according to the company.
We've seen an outbreak of "Rev.B" products lately from Aaeon -- the GENE-LN05 Rev. B single board computer and the COM-LN Rev.B module, for example -- and all appear to involve a switch of processors from Intel's "Pineview" Atom D510 processor to the later Atom D525. That's certainly the case with Aaeon's AEC-6612 Rev.B, an embedded PC that LinuxDevices.com never covered in its original form. ![]() Aaeon's AEC-6612 Frankly, the benefits of the processor change are minor: The device now accepts DDR3 memory instead of DDR2 RAM, and there's a minor clock speed bump (from 1.67GHz to 1.8GHz), but the CPU still has dual cores and a 13-Watt TDP. According to Aaeon, the AEC-6612 Rev.B accepts up to 4GB of memory in a single SODIMM slot, and can rely either on a 2.5-inch SATA drive or a CompactFlash card for storage. It also features two gigabit Ethernet ports and digital I/O (four in, four out), the company adds. Aaeon's data sheet says the AEC-6612 Rev.B is offered in a "B1" version, with just two USB 2.0 ports and two serial ports (one RS232, one RS232/422/485), and in a more fully featured "B2" version. (Confusingly, the image supplied earlier in this story doesn't seem to correspond exactly to either, so we guess there's an undocumented "B3" as well.) ![]() ![]() Aaeon's AEC-6612 Rev.B front (left) and rear (right) (Click either to enlarge) In the "B2" guise, the AEC-6612 Rev.B has a front panel (above left) that's replete with six USB 2.0 ports and six serial ports (five RS232, one RS232/422/485). In addition to the Ethernet ports that have been already mentioned, there's a VGA output. The controller's rear panel (above right), meanwhile, has a power intput that is capable of accepting input voltages ranging from 9 to 30VDC. Passively cooled, the AEC-6612 Rev.B is capable of working from -4 to 140 deg. F in locations where there is airlow, or up to 122 deg. F if there isn't. Specifications listed by Aaeon for the AEC-6612 Rev.B include:
Aaeon detailed neither pricing, operating system support, nor availability for the AEC-6612 Rev.B, but the system appears to be available now.
