Sharp used embedded Linux to build a wireless network multimedia adapter that works with Windows XP PCs, and is available in Japan, only. The CE-MR01 supports wired and 802.11a/b/g wireless networks, comes with a remote, and includes an on-screen library and player interface.

The CE-MR01 works in conjunction with Sharp Media Library Server software, available for Windows XP. The device comes with a CD that can be used to install the server software on up to three local PCs. Sharp also bundles the software with its XP-based "Mebius" line of PCs.

According to Sharp, the CE-MR01 supports UPnP, and has an "AOSS" (AirStation One-Touch Secure System) that helps users configure their wireless networking setup.

The sleek CE-MR01 has a modern, curvilinear design, and supports either vertical or horizontal mounting (pictured at right). The device measures 8.7 x 5.7 x 5 inches (221.6 x 148.1 x 125.7mm), and weighs 1-1/2 pounds (660gm) with stand.

I/O ports include a 10/100 Ethernet port (RJ-45), three TV-out ports of various kinds, and analog and digital audio outputs. The remote control takes three dry-cell batteries.
